Doris Haddock on Homeland Security

Stop hatching new terrorists

Why is the world becoming a more dangerous place for us? That is the question that can lead us toward real security. As long as there are huge regions of the world where poverty and injustice are the norm, and where our government, as servant to multinational corporations, is seen as a part of the problem and not the solution, our country will not be truly safe. The world has become too small, and too full of pocket-size weapons for us to think that we can be safe while there is yet great poverty and injustice in the world, especially where it is the product of petty dictators propped-up by U.S. foreign policy. Yes, we need to find and destroy the people who are out to kill us, but we need to stop hatching these terrorists, and we can do that with better foreign policy and more energy self-sufficiency on our part.

More thoughtful policies prevents need for security spending

All the costs of today's airport security systems, all the human and other costs of 9-11 could have been averted with more thoughtful foreign policy positions and better national energy planning.

Support our troops by avoiding sending them into harm's way

We need to support our military men & women with good pay, good services at home & abroad, and a policy of not sending them into harm's way when it can be avoided. Units need to train together, serve together & come home together. This approach has been proven to reduce casualties, abuses, and post-service emotional and physical health problems. We need to provide our veterans our highest level of medical care and other services and benefits. It is amazing to me that the GOP continues to cut benefits.

Justice stops terrorism, war does not

How do you stop terrorism? You stop it the same way you have always stopped terrorism, with justice. Justice for all the people of the Middle East. Everyone knows that. The war's proponents know that. It is just that war is more useful, and terrorism is more useful, and tragedies are more useful, if you want to take over regions abroad & limit freedoms at home. So, that is a more complex view of things than the pro-war supporters might entertain. Which view has the ring of truth to you?
