Lauren Underwood on Health Care

All Americans should have access to affordable health care
As a nurse and a health-policy expert, I believe that all Americans should have access to high-quality, affordable health care. 300,000 people in our district have pre-existing conditions and rely on the
Affordable Care Act's protections, which could very well be in jeopardy. I consider healthcare access and costs to be my number one priority.

Protect ObamaCare, and fix it for lower drug prices
Q: What is the one accomplishment you have to have if you seek reelection two years from now?REP.-ELECT LAUREN UNDERWOOD: We have to protect health care for people with pre-existing conditions. It is the most critical issue in this election--
Q:
I imagine preexisting conditions was huge in your district. And it was the number one advertised subject. That's the chief promise you believe you made?
UNDERWOOD: Absolutely.
Q: How do you think that's going to get done?
UNDERWOOD: Well, it's going to get done immediately because we can protect the Affordable Care Act and we can fix it.
We can stabilize premium prices, we can lower drug prices. But this idea that somehow people with pre-existing conditions might be vulnerable is something that I would never support.

I have a pre-existing condition
Like many Americans, I have a pre-existing heart condition called supraventricular tachycardia. This means I have a rapid heartbeat but it is well controlled and
I am fine but it is one of those diagnoses that would make it incredibly difficult and cost prohibitive for me to get insurance coverage if that version of the ACA repeal passed.

Healthcare is a human right
I believe that healthcare is a human right. The ACA is not perfect and I support policies that will improve the law. This includes stabilizing the health insurance marketplaces by providing
a long-term commitment to cost-sharing reductions and an incentive for all Americans to maintain insurance coverage. I also want properly funded risk pools so that more insurers will offer plans on the marketplace.
