Peter Camejo on Tax Reform

2004 former Reform Party nominee for Vice President; previously Candidate for CA Governor

Economy will recover when wealthiest pay fair share of taxes

We're right now hitting a record GDP but we have too much unemployment, because we're having a jobless recovery. We need to look at the fact that people paying much higher taxes than the wealthiest people in our state or what the corporations are paying. I want to cut taxes on the majority of the people, but I want the richest 1% to pay the same taxes you're paying, the average person. So we can balance our budget and start moving in the right direction.

Cutting car tax means cutting education; protect it instead

Q: Your response to the others calling for repealing the car tax?

CAMEJO: Our budget heavily funds education. When the Republicans talk about cutting the budget, they will cut education, that is what they are talking about. You notice they never mention a specific thing about what they will cut. I do not want to cut from education. I want to put more money into it. I do not want to see it privatized. Free public education must be protected and you can only do that with a fair tax in California.

Balance budget by having richest 5% pay same taxes as others

I want to balance the budget. By taking the people that are paying the lowest tax rate-the richest 5%-and have them pay the same taxes you are, that would balance the budget. If we closed the tax loopholes for corporations, get rid of the waste, we could have a surplus and start to stimulate the economy. Do you know that we can raise taxes? We are 36th in the nation in property taxes. We are 19th in taxes. We need to create the balanced budget through a fair tax.
