John Carney: Ideas to bring jobs back instead of arguing about offshoring

Alpha Technologies is currently finalizing a deal with one of the nation's largest mortgage companies that will result in nearly a dozen new hires. During Thursday's grand opening, Alpha Technologies argues that sending jobs "half a planet and 12 time zones away" is not as cost-effective as it might appear. Travel costs, difficulties with cross-border data security and even simple language barriers will convince more corporations to bring outsourced jobs back to the U.S. in the next five years

"This is a big deal," said U.S. Rep. John Carney, a Democratic candidate for governor. In Congress, "we argue until the cows come home about offshoring, but we don't come with many practical ideas about how to bring jobs back to the United States," he said. "This is the best way you could give back by creating jobs and bringing them back from overseas."

Tom Carper: Work very, very hard to knock down trade barriers

Carper said that in order to keep taxes lower, he has worked to "pull the plug" on outdated tax credits, and that he supports the Investment Tax Credit, which places incentives on companies' investments in technologies that can be sold around the world as commercial products and services. "We need to work very, very hard to knock down trade barriers so the products that we do develop, we can sell them to countries--not just Korea, Columbia and Panama, but to other countries as well," Carper said.

Chris Coons: Recent trade deals take advantage of us

I think we need to change the crazy tax policy in Washington that gives an incentive to American companies to shut down operations here and ship jobs overseas.

I've proposed expanding the home office tax credit, & for starting a new business that employs folks within the first couple of years, fighting harder in trade policy to make sure we're not letting our trading partners take advantage of us in trade deals that were signed over previous years, doing more in investment and innovation.
